What just happened? Microsoft has responded to the backlash against its new Productivity Score tool in Microsoft 365 that essentially allowed managers to monitor employees' activities. The Redmond firm is removing usernames from the feature, meaning companies will no longer be able to access information about individuals; instead, it will 'only aggregate data at the organization level.'

Wolfie Christl of the independent Cracked Labs digital research institute in Vienna, Austria, called Productivity Score a 'full-fledged workplace surveillance tool.' Microsoft claimed otherwise, but let's face it, it's hard to think of a better description.

Employers/managers can analyze employee activities at the individual level (!), for example, the number of days an employee has been sending emails, using the chat, using 'mentions' in emails etc.

The outcry seems to have caught the Windows maker by surprise, and it is now changing the tool so it no longer includes usernames, relying instead on 'device-level identifiers.' Microsoft 365 Corporate Vice President Jared Spataro explained in a blog post:

'During preview, we added a feature that showed end-user names and associated actions over a 28-day period. In response to feedback over the last week, we're removing that feature entirely. Going forward, the communications, meetings, content collaboration, teamwork, and mobility measures in Productivity Score will only aggregate data at the organization level-providing a clear measure of organization-level adoption of key features. No one in the organization will be able to use Productivity Score to access data about how an individual user is using apps and services in Microsoft 365.'

A recently discovered patent from the company described an 'insight computer system' that could monitor meetings and score them based on body language, facial expressions, room temperature, time of day, and the number of people in attendance.

If you're a student, teacher or faculty member with a school email address, you are likely eligible to get access to Office 365 for free through Microsoft -- including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Microsoft Teams and additional classroom tools.

All you have to do is enter your school email address on this page on Microsoft's website: Get started with Office 365 for free. In many cases, you'll be instantly granted access thanks to an automated verification process. If you attend an institution that needs to be verified, it might take up to a month to confirm your eligibility.

Recent graduates who want to stick with Office 365 can also get Office 365 Personal for $12 for 12 months, with a valid school email address.

For everyone else

So what's the catch for the free version?

You may be saying, wait a minute -- if I can get all of those apps for free, why pay for Microsoft 365 in the first place? The reason is that the functionality of these apps is limited: They only run through your web browser, and you can't use them if you aren't online. There are also fewer features than the full Microsoft 365 versions.

However, there are still a number of benefits, including the ability to share links to your work and collaborate in real time, similar to G Suite tools. If you're looking for basic versions of each of these apps, the free version should work well for you.
